College of Emergency Medicine responds to Lord Darzi’s report
The college has issued a SWOT analysis of Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review. It welcomes both the national and regional reports and strongly supports the principles of improving the quality of care, patient safety and that change should be clinically led, but questions the intention to reduce ED attendances outlined in some of the regional reports.
Reconfiguration section added to CEM website
The College of Emergency Medicine has added a section on reconfiguration to its website, where all documents relating to new models of care can be found. Included is the East Midlands’ response to Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review.
Patients with suspected stroke should be admitted directly to specialist stroke units
The Royal College of Physicians’ recently published National Clinical Guideline for Stroke and the new NICE guideline Stroke : diagnosis and initial management of acute stroke and TIA both recommend that all patients suspected of having a stroke should be admitted as quickly as possible to an acute stroke unit, either from the community or by being transferred from A&E.
