High Quality Care For All: NSR final report launched
The final report of Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review was published recently. The acute care clinical working group gave compelling arguments for saving lives by creating specialised centres for major trauma, heart attack and stroke care, supported by skilled ambulance services.

Plans announced for the Healthcare Commmission’s 2008/09 assessment of NHS trusts
A greater emphasis is placed in the 2008/9 assessment on the experience of patients. Surveys of patients will include adult patients attending hospital accident and emergency departments.

NICE Guidance
Stent insertion for bleeding oesophageal varices
Bleeding can occur from swollen veins in the gullet (oesophagus), which is potentially life threatening. This procedure involves temporarily insertion of a tube shape mesh covered in plastic (called a stent) into the oesophagus.
